?Can you offer one of our cats a loving, permanent home We often need new, short-term foster homes - can you help? Please visit our foster carer page for further details Thank you for showing an interest in adopting a rescue cat, and we hope the following information may help. This time of year we often have cats and kittens looking for good homes. They can come into our care for a number of reasons, either as urgent cases from the public, where the branch feel the animal is at risk, or via the RSPCA Inspectorate. Each cat or kitten is taken to the vet for a check over and will be vaccinated, treated for worms and fleas, and micro-chipped and neutered once old enough. In the case of our elderly residents, we offer a long term foster option, where veterinary costs are met by the branch on an ongoing basis, but the cat can enjoy the rest of his/her life in the comfort of a home. If you are considering adopting a cat or kitten, please consider the following; - The life expectancy of a cat is now over 20 years. Our rescue centres are full of adult cats who have found themselves handed over or abandoned simply because the previous owner had not taken into account this simple fact. If you are likely to move frequently, or even abroad, please consider this life span and either talk to us about a slightly older cat, or consider helping a number of cats through our fostering programme.
- Please research the cost of feeding/routine veterinary treatments such as flea and worming products, and Pet Insurance. If you take regular holidays, cattery costs may also need to be included.
- Is your home in an area suitable for a cat who likes to go outside? If you are in a very busy area, with busy roads, would you be prepared to consider an indoor cat?
It will take an average of six weeks for a new cat to settle into a new home - for some it will be longer. As with all animals, cat's all have individual personalities; some shy/timid who will benefit from a quiet home and a bit of patience, to very outgoing characters who will be into everything within your home! We will speak at length to you about the cats in our care, and also arrange a home-visit before the cat is adopted to give the best chance of succesfully matching you to your new pet.
A fee will be charged for rehoming a pet. This helps towards the cost of any veterinary treatment, boarding and of course the microchipping, neutering, worming and flea treatment of the animal. Please see the links at the bottom of this page for details of local centres with animals to re-home. Just a few of the felines that have been cared for by our branch.... These kittens were rescued just in time. They were all suffering with cat flu when they arrived, but as you can see they made a full recovery! They thrived in their foster home, and responded well to veterinary treatments. Once recovered, they were all successfully re-homed to understanding and loving new homes. This time of year, we always have a lot of enquiries from potential owners looking for kittens, and many of our adult cats get overlooked. This is Jack, who came into the care of the branch in quite a bad way. As with many white cats, Jack is deaf and therefore lives indoors. He had not had a lot of positive human contact when he arrived at one of the RSPCA hospitals, and was not easy to handle. With some time and patience, he has become a loving family pet - still full of character, but has settled well with his new owners and the company of another feline friend! Local RSPCA Animal Centres
Many of our animals get transferred to local RSPCA animal centres for rehoming (Southridge, Southall Cattery, Millbrook and South Godstone). Please see the following links for further information on some of the animals in local centres looking for loving homes. The centres will advise you of their rehoming terms and policies.
